Snow Polo Cup - Sierra Nevada to take place in February

Event postponed due to bad weather

The Snow Polo Cup - Sierra Nevada, originally scheduled to take place on January 20th/21st this year, has been postponed till next February 24th/25th, due to bad weather in the region.

This will be the second edition of the event, in the spectacular setting of the Parque Nacional de Sierra Nevada, in Spain. The first edition of this hugely successful event took place in 2010, and is organized by the Santa María Polo Club, a club which also goes ahead with one of the year’s five international WPT Championships.

In the first edition of the Snow Polo Cup - Sierra Nevada, the Jaeger-LeCoultre (Jack Kidd, Richard Fagan and Hernán Pieres) team claimed overall honours by defeating the Casablanca team 9-4 1/2 in the deciding match.

That edition was largely successful, with a large amount of spectators gathering to watch the action, with a number of renowned people among them, such as models Raquel Rodríguez and María José Suárez, and Luis Medina, among others, and plenty of coverage on the part of the media. Nobody wanted to miss that first Snow Polo event at Sierra Nevada, and none of those in attendance was let down by the terrific spectacle it turned out to be.

With such a terrific precedent, there are no doubts that the second edition will be another huge success. Sierra Nevada in Granada will thus play host to a most original event for this zone. Four teams, handicaps ranging between 6 and 8 goals, will take part in this second edition, with free access to the public, on a field which will be made up in the station, located in the public parking lot of Los Peñones, at 2,400 metres a.s.l.

Among the sponsors of the event are BMW, as the Official Car, Veuve Clicquot as the Official Champagne, Air France KLM as the Official Airline, together with Coca-Cola, Royal Salute Scotch Whisky, 5J, Casablanca and AMG as Official Products, plus Turismo Andaluz, Consejería de Turismo, Comercio & Deporte de la Junta de Andalucía, CETURSA, Patronato Provincial de Turismo de Granada, Diputación de Granada and the Ayuntamiento de Monachil as Official Collaborating Entities.

About

The Santa María Polo Club is located in San Roque, Cadiz province, south of Spain, and is considered one of this European country?s leading polo venues. It also stands out due to the fact that it organizes over 40 tournaments each year, which makes it one of the most action-packed ones.

This venue which lies in the region of the Strait of Gibraltar (within Andalucía) had its first playing field completed in 1965, thanks to the cooperation of Enrique Zobel, who is nowdays, due to the support he gave the club, remembered by means of the Copa Fundador (The Founder?s Cup), one of the leading events in the polo calendar. As from then on, the Santa María Polo Club has not ceased in its efforts of promoting polo.

Its event with most handicap, and which each year includes many of the world?s leading players, is the Torneo Internacional de Verano (The International Summer Tournament), the 39th edition of which is due to begin on July 27th.

The nine fields which the club has are located in three different places: the four main ones are at Los Pinos, where the high-handicap summer tournaments are played (including the International event) and, also, several ones during the winter, thanks to the excellent state of the fields. There are two in Río Sotogrande, where spring tournaments are usually played, and the remaining three are located in Puente de Hierro, where the low- and medium-handicap tournaments take place, On field three of this last-mentioned site is where polo practises usually take place.
