For the first time in 28 years, no Polo World Cup at St. Moritz
Layer of ice not thick enough. Event cancelled due to safety reasons
The layer of ice covering Lake St. Moritz is not thick enough, and it has been decided not to go ahead with the building of the infrastructure on the lake, necessary for the Polo World Cup on Snow. It is the first time this has happened in 28 years.
The risk of a major collapse is too big, and due to safety reasons, the event has had to be cancelled, following several tests made in what refers to the weight which the lake could hold. The layer of ice cannot be less than 20 cm, and each square metre must be able to hold 350 kg. These requisites are at present non-existent, as the winter conditions in the region have not been so cold this year.
Preparations for the Polo World Cup on Snow were well advanced, as planned, but the fact is that the lake is freezing slower than it had done in previous years. Alternatives were sought, but none of them proved to be convincing enough, which means there will not be any polo on the snow at St. Moritz this year.
