LivingPolo TV: Marcos Heguy

Retired as a polo player, the "Mago”" ["Magician"] draws out a roundup of this season, and gives his opinion on what can happen during 2012.

After being injured days before the 2010 Abierto de Tortugas, the world of polo heard about the news that Marcos Heguy, a multiple, Argentinian high-handicap champion, was announcing his retirement from the sport.

However, he still insists on the fact that it was the right moment for calling it a day, and that he continues enjoying the sport without the need of riding a horse.

Following La Dolfina's win against Ellerstina in the final of the Abierto Argenbino at Palermo, the last of the Hgeguys to play a 10-goal handicap, and someone whose opinions are much respected within the sport, spoke with LivingPolo.com.

LivingPolo.com: Looking at things from the outside of the field, what is your analysis regarding the Abierto Argentino and the other two tournaments of the 2011 Triple Crown?

Marcos Heguy: "It's now clear that there are two teams that are quite above the level of the rest, and that the rest are quite below that level. I think the other six are quite even, but they need to improve quite a bit so as to be able to compete with Ellerstina and La Dolfina".

LP: Is that a good or a bad thing?

Marcos Heguy: "I think it's bad. The best thing would be for the teams to be more evenly-matched, so that the matches turn out to be more interesting, It would be good if everything was more even".

LP: The last team you played for was Pilará. What are your thoughts one that team, which again had to face up to injured players this year?

Marcos Heguy: "That limits you a lot, but well, I think one has to aim at closing in as much as possible on the two leading teams (La Dolfina and Ellerstina)".

LP: Tell us brifely about the type of the season the Heguys had in 2011.

Marcos Heguy: "Nothing in particular happened: Nachi went to Ellerstina, which is an organization that comes forth with a good team without taking into account which players are in the team, and they reached three finals and won one of them, so in that aspect everything is alright; the rest [Eduardo, Alberto and Bautista Heguy] are battling it out in what we could term as a rather grey zone, in which things need to be better organized, so as to aim for better results".

LP: Despite quite some time having elapsed since you last played, how do you see this season, are you taking things easy or with some nervousness?

Marcos Heguy: "At this stage I don’t get nervous, neither due to me nor anyone".

LP: Do you think that in 2012 La Dolfina and Ellerstina will continue on top?

Marcos Heguy: "We'd have to see how the teams organize themselves. Apparently, all the teams are going to change their line-ups. With La Aguada opening up its line-up, because they have said they were separating, two teams will be formed and there will be a possibility. We'll have to see how they organize themselves, the 'phone' will tell us how they organize themselves and what there aims can be for next year.
