Dubai Gold Cup: Dubai Falcons win...but it’s not enough
Team needed two-goal margin to reach semi-finals; another win for Gulf Wings/Sumaya in day’s other match
Final qualifying round of the Threadneedle Dubai Gold Cup went ahead on Monday, March 8th at the wonderful Dubai Polo & Equestrian Club, from which the event’s four semifinalists emerged. The teams are Gulf Wings/Sumaya and Habtoor Polo from Group 1, and Zedan Polo and Mahra Polo in Group 2.
The day’s first match saw Gulf Wings/Sumaya defeat Habtoor Polo 9-7, both these being the top two teams in Group 1. Guillermo Cuitiño, part of the losing team’s lineup, was the highest goal scorer, with five goals to his name.
What followed was the most awaited clash of the day, as the winners of Group 2 would emerge from here, with three teams in with a chance. In what turned out to be a very even match, Dubai Falcons claimed a last-minute win, by 6-5, over Mahra Polo Team. However, that win was not enough for Dubai Falcons to make it into semi-finals, as it needed a two-goal margin to do so. Mahra Polo team and Zedan Polo are thus the teams from this group that will play this Wednesday’s (10th) semi-finals.
The semi-finals will be the following: Gulf Wings/Sumaya (first-placed team in Group 1) vs. Zedan Polo (second in Group 2), and Mahra Polo team (first in Group 2) vs. Habtoor Polo (second in Group 1).
