Lechuza I had won its four qualifying matches of the 14-handicap Freebooters Classic at IPB Palm Beach and had thus claimed a place in the final. The other finalist, Circa, had won two matches and lost two, which led many people to believe that Lechuza I was the definite candidate to the title.

However, as the saying goes, matches have to be played to be won, and Circa gave clear proof of that, by defeating its rivals 11-8 in the final.

Six-handicap player Francisco Bilbao, part of the Circa lineup, was elected the best player of the event, while Estrellita, belonging to David Johnson and ridden by Bilbao, was chosen as the best pony of the Freebooters Classic.
