Jacquie Shaw: “Female polo has gained much respect”

Jacquie Shaw tells us about how she sees the ladies within the world of polo, and about her expectations regarding the CaRRoL BoYeS Cup

The Val de Vie Polo Club will soon be hosting the CaRRoL BoYeS Ladies Cup, the first important ladies’ tournament to take place in Cape Twon, South Africa. The girls are eagerly awaiting the beginning of this great event.

LivingPolo.com spoke to Jacquie Shaw, who will be competing in the tournament as part of the Bongani Mountain Lodge team’s lineup, asking her about the how ladies polo is growing in South Africa and in the world, and about her outlook referred to the event which begins on Friday, February 12th.

-When did you start playing polo? How long ago?
-I started playing polo socially a few years ago, but have only played seriously during the past two years.

-Where do you usually train or play?
-I am affiliated to the Mooi River Polo Club in Kwazulu Natal.

-What are your expectations concerning the 2010 CaRRoL BoYeS Ladies Cup?
-Ladies polo in Natal has grown tremendously over the past years and I would like the CaRRoL BoYeS Ladies Cup to showcase ladies polo and attract more ladies to the sport. There are four ladies from Natal playing in this event. Our season runs between April and September, whereas the Cape Season goes from October till March, so we last played 4 months ago. My personal expectations are to stay on the horse and hopefully hit a ball!

-What are your views on the South African and the international women’s polo scenes?
-Ladies polo throughout the world has grown and gained much respect. I read a great article on Adolfo Cambiaso in which he praises Sunny Hale for her efforts and her ability.

-Who is your favourite polo player? And female player?
-Everyone loves Adolfo. Sunny Hale (USA) and Sarah van Wyk, a 2-handicap player from South Africa.

-Which other tournaments will you be competing in this season?
-I have earmarked several tournaments, including the Natal Champs, the SA Champs and the Karkloof Ladies tournament.

The CaRRoL BoYeS Ladies Cup kicks off on Friday, February 12th and comes to an end on Sunday 14th, on St. Valentin's day. LivingPolo.com will be closely following the event and keeping you updated, and is proud to be one of the its official sponsors. Our online magazine will also be present during the awards ceremony, presenting a blanket for the tournament’s best pony.
