Amy Gace: “Female polo has become highly competitive”
Amy Gace, who is taking part in the CaRRoL BoYeS Ladies Cup, outlines her points of view regarding international polo, and what to expect from the action at Val de Vie, which begins in a few days’ time
Nearly everything is ready for the CaRRoL BoYeS Ladies Cup to begin at the spectacular Val de Vie Polo Club. This will be the first important ladies event to take place in Cape Town, South Africa.
Amy Gace, one of the players competing in this tournament as part of the Kilakitu team’s lineup, refers to herself and to the forthcoming matches.
When did you start playing polo? How long ago?
I started playing about 10 years ago.
Where do you usually train or play?
I practice mainly with our club in Bergville (which is located in the Northern Drakensburg) and play mainly in KZN.
What are your expectations concerning the 2010 CaRRoL BoYeS Ladies Cup?
I think it’s fantastic that there is now a ladies tournament in Cape Town. I think it’ll be fun! Can't wait!
What are your views on the South African and international women’s polo scenes?
In South Africa, as well as internationally, "women's polo" has over the last couple of years really taken off! There are so many ladies playing around the coutry, and they are so dedicated and passionate about the sport. It has become highly competitive in what refers to the game itself and also, to the horses, both aspects have improved considerably.
Who is your favourite polo player? And female player?
Bradley Gace (my husband!) and among the female players, Nina Clarkin.
Which other tournaments will you be competing in this season?
It is still early days as our season only kicks off in April, however we plan to play tournaments in East Qriqualand, KZN , Gauteng and the Free State.
The CaRRoL BoYeS Ladies Cup kicks off on Friday, February 12th and comes to an end on Sunday 14th, on St. Valentin's day. LivingPolo.com will be closely following the event and keeping you updated, and is proud to be one of the its official sponsors. Our online magazine will also be present during the awards ceremony, presenting a blanket for the tournament’s best pony.
